The Spicy Crab tale of Nagapattinam

The sea is mostfascinating to watch, the water, the moodywaves, to feel the salt air and breeze and see the sun rising out and dipping in everyday leaves one feeling totally at peace. On one such visit, to our local beach, I saw our local fisherman with nets laden with fish and sea food of all kinds being drawn in. This scene always reminded me,of my school vacation, by the Nagappatinam beach, when all of us tried to catch fish with tea strainers. My best friend Mary’s grandpa, lived in Nagapattinam I only remember him, wearing, an old lungi, chatting with his cronies, laughing heartily, whilesitting on his rocking chair and everyday sipping a cup of freshly caught crab soup. From Mary’s mother I learnt the famous spicy crab soup, recipe and being the zodiac sign of the crab, was always fascinated with this crab filled soup. Here is the recipe, handed down from generation to generation and being captured in my recipe book, with my own twists and turns to it.Even today Crab soup is made every day in Mary’s house, as she lives there and has her grandchildren visiting her. The legend of the crab soup is , that whoever cooks it and nourishes their family, will always keep their family happy and together. Like the indrawn crab , secures its own.
